Finding observation hours is a necessary step to landing a spot in an OT graduate program. It can be really tricky to navigate, so here is a step by step guide to finding them!
🤍 Compile a list of all the OTs in your area. Google “my area occupational therapists” and start there. Look for anyone, OTs, pediatric facilities, skilled nursing facilities, therapy gyms, etc. I would recommend making a Word doc and compiling names, locations, emails, and phone numbers.
🤍 Reach out to those OTs/facilities by phone first! Cold call each place and present yourself as a pre-OT student. Be polite and professional. If you aren’t finding any success, I would resort to emailing.
🤍 Cross your fingers and wait! If they give you a call back or more information, great! If not, don’t panic. It took me a couple of months to get my first opportunity. OTs are busy people and it might take some time.
🤍 Look for connections. Does a professor you have know an OT? Is a family member one or do they know one? Connections really are a great way to get opportunities.
🤍 In the midst of the pandemic these days, be open to shadowing teletherapy/virtual shadowing. Be flexible and let them know upfront that you are okay with this! Some facilities may be doing teletherapy strictly, so know this ahead of time.
